SAIEG presents a two day course on ROCK IDENTIFICATION FOR ENGINEERS Ollivanders Estate, Mr551 Road, Shongweni, KwaZulu-Natal Friday 21 October 2016 – Rock Identification Theory & Practical Saturday 22 October 2016 – Field Trip

Two (2) ECSA CPD points will be allocated to delegates attending both days. Delegates only attending one day will be allocated one (1) ECSA CPD point.

THIS COURSE IS DESIGNED FOR: • Young or learner geotechnical and civil engineers • Technicians and technologists in the civil engineering industry • Anyone working in the civil engineering field who deals with engineering properties of rock and soil and would like a refresher course in rock classification and identification

COURSE PRESENTERS Robert Leyland (PhD. Geological Engineering from the University of Arizona) and Lindi Richer (BSc Hons. Geology from the University of the Witwatersrand) will be running the course.

Registration opens at 07:30. The course commence at 08:30 on Friday and the field trip at 08:00 on Saturday.

Rock Identification Theory & Practical Field Trip
Day 1 – Friday 21 October 2016
Day 2 – Saturday 22 October 2016 The course content covers:

  • Basic mineralogy
  • Sedimentary rocks
  • Igneous rocks
  • Metamorphic rocks
  • Pedogenic materials

Identification of hand specimens A trip around parts of KwaZulu-Natal to visit exposures of various rock types. This will include most of the common rock types in their natural state. It will include igneous, sedimentary and metamorphic rocks.
