A SIX DECADE GEOTECHNICAL AND ENGINEERING GEOLOGY JOURNEY

Gary Jones graduated in 1957 at Cambridge. Some years later he was awarded his PhDat the University of Natal for research on the development of the piezocone for thedetermination of the geotechnical properties of the alluvial deposits along the easterncoast of South Africa.

He began his career in Zimbabwe and followed this with spells in the UK and Ugandabefore settling in South Africa where he worked for consultants, the Natal RoadsDepartment and the CSIR before joining SRK Consulting.Having retired from SRK in 1998 he became a corporate consultant for them and also anextraordinary professor at the University of Pretoria. Gary is the author of fifty papers andpublications on a variety of geotechnical subjects and has received the Jennings Award,the Geotechnical Gold Medal and is an Honorary Fellow of SAICE.
