Breaking Ground: Advancing Mine Waste Design and Assessment

On Friday, 9 February 2024, the SAICE Geotechnical Division hosted a highly anticipated 1-day course on the Design and Assessment of Mine Waste Structures at the CSIR International Convention Centre in Pretoria. The course brought together professionals and industry leaders to explore the latest methodologies and advancements in mine waste management.

The event featured three distinguished speakers:

  • Dr. G. Ward Wilson (University of Alberta),
  • Dr. Nicholas Beier (University of Alberta), and
  • Mr. Michel Julien (Agnico Eagle Mines).

These experts shared their knowledge across a range of critical topics, including:

  • Surface Tailings Disposal,
  • Conventional Tailings Embankment Design,
  • Hydrology and Groundwater,
  • Engineering Properties of Mine Waste, and
  • Seepage Analysis.

To enhance accessibility, additional recordings were made available to participants ahead of the event, ensuring thorough preparation and engagement.
