The geotechnical industry is currently facing a shortage of qualified D4 reviewers, which has led to delays in critical assessments for dolomite-related projects. In response, a formal call for D4 Competent Person nominations will be issued soon to address this gap and strengthen the review process.
To improve industry standards, SANS1936 is being revised to resolve long-standing issues with the D4 criteria and introduce critical amendments that better accommodate modern practices. A dedicated dolomite sub-committee has been formed to spearhead these revisions, alongside efforts to re-establish a Working Group for SABS TC59/SC03. The aim is to incorporate necessary changes while maintaining the foundational integrity of the code, ensuring it is more adaptable and robust for future use.
In parallel, ongoing collaboration with SACNASP seeks to align professional registration and competency requirements, creating a clear and unified pathway forward for geotechnical professionals working on dolomite-related challenges.
These efforts underscore the commitment to advancing dolomite standards and ensuring the safety and sustainability of infrastructure developments in South Africa.
