The 2024 SAICE Geotechnical Division Awards celebrated excellence, innovation, and dedication in geotechnical engineering. This year’s Barry van Wyk Award for the best final-year dissertation was awarded to Chazz Seegers (UCT) for his research on geotextile/geomembrane interfaces. The J.E. Jennings Award recognized T.A.V. Gaspar, S.W. Jacobsz, G. Smit, and A.S. Osman for their groundbreaking work on piled foundations in swelling clays.
Honouring outstanding industry contributions, the Distinguished Service Award was presented to Heather Davis for her lasting impact on the profession. Congratulations to all winners and nominees for their remarkable achievements, advancing geotechnical engineering in South Africa.

Young geotechnical professionals under 35 working in geotechnical engineering, engineering geology, mining, or civil construction will have the opportunity to showcase their work at the 11th South African Young Geotechnical Engineers Conference (SAYGEC), taking place in September 2026 in the Central Drakensberg.
